Description:

Alfred Henri Darjou (French, 1832-1874), Game Painting. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1879 l.r., with plaque corresponding to artist's name. An impressive subject with figures in a courtyard in front of thatched roof home, playing a form of game, whereby they toss balls into a barrel with an opening. The canvas has not been relined; 25" x 35" (sight), 35" x 46" (framed). A pair of labels are included on verso, including a framer, as well as a hand written label, likely inscribed by the artist, although it is faded.

The game played appears to be Petanque, which originated in 19th century France, and is similar to current day bocce ball.

    Dimensions:
  • 200
  • Condition:
  • Canvas has not been lined, original frame, previously cleaned but likely in the early 20th century, with no evidence of inpainting under UV.
