ESSAY

A proof of Le Chevalier de paille, created by Giacometti for Andre Breton's L'Air de l'eau, dated and signed by the artist was sold by Kornfeld and Klipstein in Bern as part of lot 300 on June 12, 1968.1 This lot also included two other proofs created by Giacometti for Breton's L'Air de L'eau: La Main2and Animal 1.3 All 3 proofs have nearly identical descriptions, with one exception: Animal 1 adds the inscription "A mon cher ami Tristan Tzara."

Solway's listing for Le Chevalier de paille in his 1970 gallery catalogue mirrors the listing in the 1968 sale by Kornfeld and Klipstein; Solway is also offering La Main in this catalogue - both offerings indicate this rare impression formerly in the Tristan Tzara collection. It is well known that Carl Solway made many trips to Europe during the 1960s and 1970s and the 1970 catalogue also offers works by Picasso, Matisse and other modernists.
