Description:

Marie Charlotte Amélie Augustine Victoire Clémentine Léopoldine of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, better known under the name Charlotte, was the daughter of King Leopold I of Belgium and Louise of Orléans. In the month of May 1856, Charlotte met in Brussels with Archduke Maximilian of Austria, younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. As the wife of Archduke Maximilian of Austria, Viceroy of Lombardy??"Venetia and later Emperor of Mexico, she became Archduchess of Austria (in 1857) and Empress consort of Mexico (in 1864).

This large and majestic veil is described in Marian Powy's culturally important book, "Lace and Lace Making", on page 143. The veil was a gift from Empress Carlota's father, King Leopold of Belgium, for her Mexican coronation in 1864. According to Powys the veil was made by the best workers of the Belgium lace industry. Later in 1866 when Carlota left Mexico and returned to Europe in an attempt to gain assistance for her husband from Napoleon III or the pope, she gave the veil to one of her Mexican servants. The veil traveled eventually to New York City in 1930.

Exquisite designs in lace include florals, the Mexican Coat of Arms and detailed patterning. "Interestingly it was misidentified as Brussels Duchesse in Powys book, and is in fact Belgian bobbin lace in the Ghent style" (Deborah Miller appraisal of William Hodges Estate: August 31, 2014).

132" long x 66" wide. Lace is stitched to a silken base. Powy's book included with this lot.

From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
